Hi, my name is Scott Terry. I have a doctorate in Educational Psychology so you can call me Dr Terry if you want, but most people just call me Scott. That is part of my whole approach to therapy. I believe in making it less formal so that we can communicate in a direct, honest and natural way.
To foster that, sometimes I like to meet with clients outside of the office. So we might go for a walk by the lake, play a game whatever it takes to make you more at ease, so that we can discuss the real issues.
We call this environmental psychotherapy. The purpose of our talking is not just to talk, but to make life better, really better, soon.
I am a licenced marriage and family therapist and I have been practicing for over 15 years and I have had experience with a wide range of individual clients, couples and families. I have also provided counseling services to businesses.
I am on the board of three mental health organizations. I also lecture at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology on couples therapy and on other topics.
I come from a business and arts background. In the past, I also helped start companies (created new divisions, company expansions, and re-organizations) and made video and photographic documentaries with seniors. I was always interested in paradigm shifts and in how individuals perceived things and how these perceptions could change and could make a difference in the growth of the company or individual. I was more interested in what people had to say than making art.
I had a psychiatrist friend who suggested that I have a natural ability as a therapist, but that I am not the classic counsellor. I am more interested in different people's realities and more interested in people coming back to balance and a sense of self in the world.
I am developing a self-regulation model that looks at clinical growth simultaneously in a number of areas. I am working on a number of academic theories for clinical application. Email me via info@ardentcenter.com for more details.
Supervision is available for other clinicians. My supervision training comes from Philadelphia Child and Family Therapy Training Center, Inc.
